By June this year<\/span>, <\/span>we have met over<\/span> 800 <\/span>highly <\/span>educated <\/span>immigrants in <\/span>personal guidance<\/span> at SIMHE-Metropolia<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>1<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span> In 2018, <\/span>we met more women than men in personal guidance. Although,<\/span> the<\/span> gender ratio has <\/span>been<\/span> fairly<\/span> equal<\/span> among the sexes in previous years too.<\/span> In general, i<\/span>mmigrant<\/span>-background<\/span> women face more difficult<\/span>ies in<\/span> entering the <\/span>labour<\/span> market compared to their male counterparts as pointed <\/span>out <\/span>by <\/span>2018 OECD report on skills and <\/span>labour<\/span> market integration of immigrants in Finland<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>2<\/span>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Career mentoring is a joint effort towards better employability\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/h5>\n

I have volunteered as a mentor for an immigrant<\/span>-background<\/span> lady<\/span> in <\/span>the <\/span>Finnish Family Federation<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> nine-month<\/span> Womento mentoring <\/span>programme<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>3<\/span>)<\/span> in 2018-2019<\/span>. The <\/span>programme<\/span> has been<\/span> running<\/span> since 2011 to pair up<\/span> highly educated <\/span>female <\/span>immigrants an<\/span>d native Finnish women. The mentor-menteer pairs usually share similar<\/span> educational and professional background<\/span>s<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, our <\/span>autumn 2018 <\/span>group <\/span>had<\/span> 12 mentor-mentee pairs<\/span> with the mentees interested in finding ca<\/span>reers in their field in Finland. I was also happy to find few of my previous SIMHE customers among the mentees in our group. Furthermore, the m<\/span>entors have a long experience in their field and a genuine i<\/span>nterest to support their mentees. As a result, the mentees become more <\/span>familiar with the Finnish society and working-life.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have met with my mentee in the joint sessions at the Finnish Family Federation and in our one-to-<\/span>one<\/span> meetings about once or twice in every two months since October 2018. As we shared common interests and educational background, it has been of mutual benefit to talk, share experiences and discuss about the trends in the field. My mentee had education as her main goal and we have been very pleased that she has accomplished her goal during our mentoring voyage.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have now been a mentor twice <\/span>in <\/span>my<\/span> professional<\/span> life. At first,<\/span> in <\/span>Metropolia<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> own<\/span> mentoring <\/span>programme<\/span> in 2017-2018<\/span> and now in <\/span>the <\/span>Womento <\/span>prog<\/span>r<\/span>amme<\/span>.<\/span> Therefore, I strongly recommend <\/span>mentoring<\/span> to anyone who is willing to support others in finding their way in<\/span> working life and in Finland<\/span>. Above all, the<\/span> small<\/span> investment you put in as your time and devotion results in many wonderful encounters and <\/span>enticing <\/span>discussions. Additionally, you will get new and fresh idea for you to use as well.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

How to make<\/b> Finland<\/b> a home<\/b> – <\/b>let\u2019s<\/b> focus on the spouses<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/h5>\n

Finland is in need of international talents<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>4<\/span>) due to a<\/span>n<\/span> ageing<\/span> population and already existing competence-deficit in some fields. Many brave newcomers have already moved here with their families. <\/span>Universities, like <\/span>Aalto University<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>5<\/span>) in Helsinki region as well as <\/span>Finnish business sector<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>6<\/span>) have also paid attention to make <\/span>it <\/span>all easier to move to Finland – also with the family.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is somewhat common that women move to Finland along with their company-recruited husbands. Thus, highly educated wives are also looking for their path in Finland. Some of them have perhaps spent several years at home due to taking care of their children. Once your family has settled in at work, daycare or school, you wish to get back to business too! <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Companies do try to make it better for people to settle. For instance, I participated in a Supercell spouse event in May to introduce our SIMHE services. Albeit, this was not a new concept at Supercell as they had had a <\/span>spouse event<\/span><\/a> (7) also in 2018. The get-together was well <\/span>organised<\/span> with guest speakers from municipality services like <\/span>International House Helsinki<\/span><\/a> (8), well-being experts from <\/span>Compass Psychology<\/span><\/a> (9) to start-up scene at <\/span>Shortcut<\/span><\/a> (10). There was also plenty of time to mingle prior to and after the presentations.\u00a0 I had vivid discussions with some affluent <\/span>ladies<\/span> from Mexico, Singapore, Russia, <\/span>Kazakstan<\/span> and India over a buffet meal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s<\/b> a woma<\/b>n\u2019s world<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/h5>\n

Moving between countries and settling into new cultures is more and more prevalent trend in our contemporary world. Although, giving immigrant women possibilities to integrate in the society through education and work benefits not only them, but also their families and the Finnish society in general. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Living in a new country without any connection to education or work can be a daunting experience for an educated person. However,<\/span> I have met many courageous <\/span>ladies<\/span> who are ready to tackle the obstacles. In conclusion, <\/span>English <\/span>writer<\/span> Virginia Wool<\/span>f has encapsulated this phenomenon <\/span>so well <\/span>nearly a century ago in her quote <\/span>\u201cAs a woman I have no country. As a <\/span><\/i>woman<\/span><\/i> I want no country. As a woman,<\/span><\/i> my country is the whole world\u201d.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
