How have\u00a0you boosted your professional networks in the past couple of months?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

As we embarked into this decade,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra<\/span><\/i>\u00a0published a\u00a0<\/span><\/i>compilation of<\/span><\/i>\u00a0future mega trends<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(1)\u00a0<\/span><\/i>stating that the importance of networks and managing them will only continue growing<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>But<\/span><\/i>\u00a0how to\u00a0<\/span><\/i>discover and\u00a0<\/span><\/i>s<\/span><\/i>eize opportunities for networking?<\/span><\/i>\u00a0This is with no doubt\u00a0<\/span><\/i>one of the most frequently asked questions I encounter in my\u00a0<\/span><\/i>work<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>as a career coach for international talents at\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Metropolia<\/span><\/i>\u00a0University of Applied Sciences.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Institutes<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of higher education boosting networking between businesses and international talents<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Networks surely are vital for the integration process of a newcomer entering the Finnish labor market, and the lack of professional networks is perceived as one of the main obstacles to the employment of international talents<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0scarc<\/span>ity of<\/span>\u00a0networks\u00a0<\/span>gives rise to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>another\u00a0<\/span>issue<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>E<\/span>mployers are struggling to spot the international talents with suitable profiles, while the latter group finds it hard to discover Finnish businesses in their own field<\/span>\u00a0(2).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a study on cooperation between Finnish institutes of higher education and businesses, issued by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of Education and Culture (<\/span>3<\/span>), the main objective for\u00a0<\/span>businesses collaborating with institutes of higher education was recruiting new workforce.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Further development of networking opportunities meeting the needs of\u00a0<\/span>everyone<\/span>\u00a0involved is for sure\u00a0<\/span>in demand<\/span>, and it\u00a0<\/span>seems to be a timely objective for us at institutes of higher education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perks of\u00a0<\/span><\/b>tailored recruiting events<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We,\u00a0<\/span>the SIMHE Metropolia team<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(4)<\/span>, have the luxury of working with various groups of international talents: both current international degree students, and persons with a higher education degree from abroad seeking to develop their career in Finland. Among these professionals of different fields, the common denominator is their motivation to create networks to local businesses and find their niche in them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, we decided to organize a recruiting event focusing on businesses interested in the potential of our English-speaking international talents. The event, \u201c<\/span>Metropolia<\/span>\u00a0Match – Boost your Business\u201d took place\u00a0<\/span>in early March<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and successfully united businesses with high-skilled talents.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the<\/span>ir<\/span>\u00a0feedback, the participating companies were pleased to attend a<\/span>n event tailored specifically for English\u00a0speakers, and\u00a0<\/span>thanked the attending international talents for being well prepared and genuinely interested in\u00a0<\/span>hearing more about the businesses<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0For example,\u00a0<\/span>the recruiting company Digipool<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(5)<\/span>\u00a0not only\u00a0<\/span>discovered<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>several interesting profiles for their clients,\u00a0<\/span>in line with<\/span>\u00a0the common procedure for recruiting companies,\u00a0<\/span>but also hired\u00a0<\/span>a recruitment consultant and\u00a0<\/span>a marketing specialist straight from the event<\/span>\u00a0to boost their own business<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are l<\/span>ooking forward to the next round,\u00a0<\/span>as soon as gatherings of people are possible again. Next time\u00a0<\/span>perhaps with an increasing amount of businesses tapping the potential of our international talents!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Networking events instead of recruiting events<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Events are great opportunities for brushing up on your networking\u00a0<\/span>and self-presentation\u00a0<\/span>skills and hence being less nervous when you have a chance to impress a potential employer at a job interview.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Thus<\/span>\u00a0no need to be disappointed, if a visit at a career fair did\u00a0<\/span>not<\/span><\/i>\u00a0lead into a direct job offer<\/span>\u00a0yet<\/span>, since you probably\u00a0<\/span>made new connections anyway.\u00a0<\/span>Due to this reason, it would\u00a0actually make\u00a0more sense to talk about networking events instead of recruiting events.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides\u00a0<\/span>forging\u00a0<\/span>new connections<\/span>\u00a0at events<\/span>, there are other\u00a0<\/span>benefits likely to arise<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>P<\/span>erhaps\u00a0<\/span>you\u00a0<\/span>could<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>receive\u00a0<\/span>valuable feedback on your CV or LinkedIn profile<\/span>\u00a0by a recruiting professional<\/span>, or\u00a0<\/span>learnt<\/span>\u00a0more about the skills need<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>by<\/span>\u00a0an interesting company<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>then used<\/span> this knowledge for the most brilliant job application they are about to receive.<\/span>\u00a0Talk about perks!<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

G<\/span><\/b>rowing your professional networks online<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And<\/span>\u00a0yes<\/span> – due to the exceptional situation we are currently facing, lots of upcoming events have been cancelled. It is thus<\/span>\u00a0th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0ideal timing to fix up your LinkedIn profile and see what kind of opportunities for networking are available there, for example groups and channels in your professional field. This is also the prime time to keep an eye on emerging virtual platforms, such as the Find a job in Finland Meetup<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(6)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Or<\/span>\u00a0maybe\u00a0<\/span>you<\/span><\/i>\u00a0will come up with a new online-based solution for networking?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other steps taken<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>to\u00a0<\/span><\/b>create\u00a0<\/span><\/b>new\u00a0<\/span><\/b>networking<\/span><\/b>\u00a0opportunities<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What kind of a role can Finnish institutes of higher education, such as universities of applied sciences, have in facilitating networking among international talents and local businesses seeking for talented workforce, apart from organizing networking events?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the study on cooperation between Finnish institutes of higher education and businesses (<\/span>3<\/span>), one key issue mentioned by the businesses was that institutes of higher education do not seem to\u00a0<\/span>be sufficiently informed<\/span> on the actual needs of businesses. To address this issue, we at SIMHE <\/span>Metropolia<\/span>\u00a0(4)<\/span>\u00a0aim at acknowledging the skills needs of companies as the first step in the collaboration process.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, our current project\u00a0<\/span>SIMHE path<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(7)\u00a0<\/span>strives for matching the skills needs of participating businesses operating in the field of ICT with the skills of the project participants. The latter group consists of persons with a higher education degree in the field of ICT completed abroad, often supplemented by even years of work experience in their\u00a0field, yet\u00a0lacking sufficient networks for finding employment in Finland.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matching the profiles of international talents with the skills needs of businesses<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To tackle the challenge of\u00a0<\/span>international talents\u00a0<\/span>lacking both networks and information concerning the\u00a0<\/span>skills needs of their <\/span>professional field in Finland<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>2<\/span>)<\/span>, we first mapped the skills needs of\u00a0<\/span>the ICT companies taking part in the SIMHE path project. <\/span>This information\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0then u<\/span>tilized<\/span>\u00a0in order to match the companies with the participants\u2019 skills<\/span>. I<\/span>f needed, the participants have an opportunity to supplement their skills by taking online courses in the field of ICT<\/span>, to even better correspond with<\/span>\u00a0the expectations\u00a0<\/span>of potential employers<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering that<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWhat are the top skills in my field that employers based in Finland are looking for?\u201d\u00a0<\/span>is one of the<\/span>\u00a0top questions\u00a0<\/span>asked by the international talents at our career counselling and guidance services, this kind of opportunities are <\/span>desirable<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The SIMHE path project also\u00a0<\/span>showcases<\/span>\u00a0the plurality of ways for an institute of higher education to facilitate networking between businesses and international talents.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
