You might have heard about<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">hard skills and<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">soft skills (2), employability skills (3), future skills needs (4) and so on. All kinds of skills are important, but these kinds of categories can help you to identify the skills you have.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One commonly used categorisation is to make a distinction between job-specific (5) and transferable skills (6).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">J<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ob-specific skills<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> are the skills required to be able to work in certain profession or certain field. For<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> example, if you work as an architect you need CAD skills. As a teacher, pedagogical skills are crucial for you to be able to do your work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Transferable skills<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are skills that are relevant to any job, no matter the professional field or the title. You can take transferable skills with you from one job to another. For instance, communication skills and analytical skills are relevant to an engineer as well as to a teacher and a marketing professional<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Transferable skills <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re especially important to recognise if you are just starting your career or changing careers. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These are typically situations in which you might not necessarily yet have a lot of concrete work experience in the field you are applying to. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>You develop new skills throughout life<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Skills are not something you learn only in school or while working. You gain new skills also when volunteering, while participating in social activities, in your hobbies and personal projects and just by living your everyday life. For example, while staying at home and taking care of your children, you might learn skills like patience, handling unexpected situations, negotiation skills and flexibility. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When adapting to a new country and culture, one typically develops curiosity, productivity and resilience <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(7,8). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Job search, then again, might improve your self-knowledge, networking skills and perseverance, for example.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As you start identifying your skills, it\u2019s good to remember that you don\u2019t need to be an expert on something to be able to say that you have that skill. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomstaxonomy.net\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Blooms Taxonomy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 learning starts with remembering and understanding. After that you will move on to applying, analysing, evaluating and creating. So, you can be on a beginners\u2019 level with some skills (you understand the skill, and you can maybe even apply it a little) and on an expert level with others (you are fluent in applying the skill and you can even analyse and evaluate it). (9) Skills will develop as you get to use them (10).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to get started with identifying your key strengths, skills and competencies?<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Luckily, a lot of tools and methods are available \u2012 for free \u2012 to help you identify and put your key skills and competences into words.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take a quiz<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. To recognise your personal strengths, try<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viacharacter.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The VIA Survey of Character Strengths<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The test is based on theories of positive psychology and it can give ideas on where your<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">personal strengths lie. H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">owever, tests shoud always be taken with caution and critical review: they do not necessarily provide the ultimate truth, but should rather be used for ideas and inspiration on your journey.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ask a friend.\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s usually a whole lot easier to see skills in others rather than in yourself. Be bold and ask someone who knows you well to give you feedback on your skills. These tools will help you to make your skills visible to yourself.<\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Study job ads and company web pages. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">can offer you detailed information about the skills demands in companies, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and give you information about the skills you need to develop next. Other organisations such as other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oph.fi\/en\/simhe-services-higher-education-institutions\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">higher education institutions offering SIMHE services<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infofinland.fi\/en\/living-in-finland\/work-and-enterprise\/employee-s-rights-and-obligations\/trade-unions\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">trade unions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in your field <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and employment services can also offer career guidance services.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Recognising skills is one of the top skills of the future<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As the skills demands of work are constantly changing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we also need to adapt and focus on developing new kind of skills. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oph.fi\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/osaaminen_2035.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Osaaminen 2035 (PDF)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by Finnish National Agency for Education<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">shows that the skills earlier considered as \u201csoft\u201d, skills like creativity and problem-solving, are actually the hard skills of the future. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is not easy to predict which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> skills are \u201cthe must-have skills\u201d in the future, but for example ability to learn and to develop personal competencies is definitely one of the most important ones. It\u2019s about participation, involvement, agency and wellbeing. How we see our skills and what we think we are capable of doing will define our careers and future goals.
