In this series of articles, Metropolia library employees talk about their work within a UAS. Join us as we reveal what's happening within the walls of the library these days!  Have you ever imagined books magically returning to the shelves when no one's looking? As much as we'd love to believe in such magic, the reality is quite different. The work of a librarian isn't so obvious to the average person, especially here in Finland, where the library system is so efficient that you don't have to interact with real people — unless you really want or need to. We can order books through an app, pick them up from a shelf, and return them to an automatic machine. At least, that's how I've always been using libraries. But have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes? As a Metropolia student of Information Technology, I had the chance to work as an IT intern in the Metropolia UAS library for a few months. Now, I can share some insights into what really goes on — and maybe offer a few useful tips along the way. What Do Librarians Actually Do? Turns out, a lot more than you'd think! Here's a glimpse into the daily tasks: Customer Service (ASPA, or short for “Asiakaspalvelu”): Helping students and staff with their questions, finding resources, and providing guidance. Processing Orders and Returns (POSPA, or “Posti ja Palautus”): Delivering and arranging books you've ordered from MetCat Finna, covering new books with protective plastic, and making sure returned books go back to the right spots. Maintaining Online Resources: Updating and creating content for LibGuides to help you find the information you need. Study Guidance: Offering support to students who need help finding information in our databases. Organizing Events: Arranging activities like MetGo and a stand at Metka Sport to enrich campus life. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! Did You Know? Here are some handy tips, especially for international students: Free Access to Sanakirja.fi: Use your Metropolia credentials to access this amazing online dictionary for free. Access to study rooms and printing services: Book spaces using Tuudo App for studying and collaboration, and use the printing services available at the library. Book a Librarian: You can schedule a time with a librarian to get guidance on how to search for information — for example, for your thesis. Free Book Shelf: In Myllypuro Campus next to Metka Cafe, there's a shelf with free books that are out of the system for various reasons (like a missing page). Feel free to pick one up! E-books Subscription: With your Metropolia login, you have access to a wide range of e-books in Finnish and in English (check out the LibGuides to see the full list of resources available for your field).
