This survey was a part of the on-going development project where a student-oriented guidance model is being created for Metropolia. The nearly 200 responses drew a picture of numerous Metropolia staff members as compassionate and versatile professionals as well as genuinely empowering and supportive instructors.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The development of student guidance is one of the goals\u00a0in the\u00a0current\u00a0Metropolia\u00a0strategy.\u00a0One concrete part of it is\u00a0building a student-oriented guidance model. The development of the model started in autumn 2020, and the goal is to complete\u00a0the model\u00a0during 2021.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the basic\u00a0building blocks\u00a0in\u00a0the student-oriented guidance model is\u00a0understanding\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guidance\u00a0belongs\u00a0to everyone<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0It\u00a0is not only top-down, information flowing from\u00a0a\u00a0teacher to\u00a0a\u00a0student, but guidance takes place in all encounters. In this\u00a0article, we focus on the interaction and guidance between the teacher (instructor) and the student.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The quotes presented in this article were received from\u00a0the student\u00a0survey.\u00a0The citations\u00a0were\u00a0edited to protect the privacy of\u00a0the\u00a0respondents, but the\u00a0contents\u00a0were\u00a0not changed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Good\u00a0Guidance\u00a0Needs\u00a0Time,\u00a0Attention and\u00a0Respect<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the classic view of\u00a0Onnismaa\u00a0(2007), good guidance\u00a0needs\u00a0time, attention and respect. In a\u00a0guidance\u00a0situation, the relationship between the\u00a0instructor\u00a0and the student\u00a0is equal and confidential.\u00a0Guidance\u00a0should not be\u00a0grounded\u00a0on the\u00a0instructor&#8217;s\u00a0assumptions or\u00a0beliefs, but\u00a0rather\u00a0on\u00a0solutions\u00a0derived from\u00a0facts, listening and interaction.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Good guidance strengthens the student&#8217;s self-confidence and\u00a0sense of\u00a0agency.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There was a feeling that the situation will work out and they have faith in me.<\/p>\n<p>No fuss, but straightforward nudging.<\/p>\n<p>My thesis process was stretched, but the teacher didn\u2019t blame me for it. Doing the work was more motivating when you were trusted and things were handled with a positive mindset.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In accordance with the holistic guidance\u00a0model (Watts &amp; Van\u00a0Esbroeck\u00a01998),\u00a0guidance\u00a0is a layered and comprehensive collaboration between different actors for the benefit of the\u00a0guided\u00a0person. These actors\u00a0include teachers and guidance counsellors,\u00a0tutors and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">student services coordinators<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">informaticians\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and janitors.\u00a0The counselling of learning and studies includes also guidance of professional as well as personal growth.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I received individual guidance through a video call for information search within my field of studies and for using the school library.<\/p>\n<p>I am rethinking my career choice. I received tips and advice from my guidance counsellor on putting my studies on hold and possibly resuming after the pause.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The different aspects of guidance are integrated into each other when everyone working with the student gives their share \u2013 either\u00a0knowingly or unknowingly.\u00a0The interaction between the student and the teacher plays a particularly important role in the student&#8217;s learning process.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the survey answers guidance counsellors also came out\u00a0as a\u00a0significant\u00a0supporters in\u00a0students&#8217; study paths and lives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Guidance Is Part of Every Teacher\u2019s Work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every teacher is involved in student guidance and\u00a0counselling,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">whether they\u00a0knowingly make a decision to do so or not. The\u00a0guidance\u00a0situation is\u00a0always\u00a0a threat and an opportunity at the same time\u00a0&#8211; what\u00a0the\u00a0teacher does and says can have far-reaching consequences.\u00a0Even after decades, someone still remembers the frustrated gust of an elementary school teacher: &#8221;You&#8217;ll never be anything!&#8221; On the other hand, the teacher&#8217;s supportive words can give the student faith in\u00a0their\u00a0own competence and support\u00a0them in their\u00a0life for a long time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The teacher&#8217;s feedback was sincere, so I knew it was true.<\/p>\n<p>She heard and understood me and said I don\u2019t have to do more than I\u2019m able to.<\/p>\n<p>The teacher didn\u2019t allow me to get it too easy. Teacher should and must require performance based on what the student is capable of.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whenever a teacher encounters a student, he or she influences the student&#8217;s\u00a0self-perception\u00a0as a learner, student and person,\u00a0but in addition\u00a0the teacher\u00a0has an\u00a0influence\u00a0on\u00a0the student\u2019s\u00a0attitudes, motivation, self-confidence\u00a0as well as\u00a0perception\u00a0of hope and faith.\u00a0That is\u00a0why\u00a0it is\u00a0important to think\u00a0about\u00a0and be aware of\u00a0how you act in different guidance\u00a0situations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider these:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"13\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How do I influence this student through my own actions and my verbal and\u00a0non-verbal\u00a0communication?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"13\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Do I create\u00a0hope or despair,\u00a0courage\u00a0or fear?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"13\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Do I teach life-long\u00a0skills?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"13\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Do I offer quick advice and pre-chewed answers\u00a0or do I respect the student&#8217;s right to make choices and decisions about his or her own\u00a0life, whether they are\u00a0right or\u00a0wrong in my opinion?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"13\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Does my guidance\u00a0stem from\u00a0compassion and\u00a0genuine\u00a0desire\u00a0to help?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559739&quot;:220}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">A\u00a0Little\u00a0Guide to\u00a0Good\u00a0Guidance<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the\u00a0student\u00a0survey, a few themes\u00a0were often mentioned together with good guidance.\u00a0\u00a0These themes can be\u00a0summarised\u00a0as a four-item guide:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">1. An equal, sincere encounter.<\/p>\n<p>I remember the warmth and how easy it was to approach this teacher. The teacher encouraged me to get in touch.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">2. Ask and encourage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Coaching\u00a0is an\u00a0approach\u00a0where the coach helps the\u00a0coachee\u00a0to harness their strengths when targeting their goals.\u00a0A coach\u00a0operates with\u00a0open-ended questions and\u00a0refrains from\u00a0ready-made answers. (Ruutu,\u00a02020).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0instructor\u00a0can also help the student to see things from new perspectives, which can already be a sufficient help to initiate the\u00a0student\u00b4s\u00a0own problem solving\u00a0(Mattila, 2011).\u00a0The instructor\u2019s\u00a0encouraging words concerning\u00a0the student\u2019s ability to move forward in a situation can be crucial. In fact, a strong\u00a0self-reliance seems\u00a0to protect well-being and reduce stress, according to\u00a0some\u00a0research (Ruutu,\u00a02020).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220,&quot;469777462&quot;:[916,1832,2748,3664,4580,5496,6412,7328,8244,9160,10076,10992,11908,12824,13740,14656],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The teacher challenged me to think.<\/p>\n<p>I received good and encouraging, but above all critical and challenging guidance that changed my self-perception as a researcher and a professional in my own field.<\/p>\n<p>In a difficult situation, I received gentle and encouraging guidance. I was able to\u00a0 put my studies on hold since I had clear plans for the future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">3. Focus on the encounter, not the tool\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During\u00a0the Covid\u00a0pandemic the chance for real-life encounters\u00a0was dramatically decreased. But luckily we have had the opportunity for genuine connection via\u00a0online\u00a0tools.\u00a0The video call connection is more reminiscent of face-to-face interaction than we might have thought (Hietanen &amp; co, 2020), and psychological security can be built in the encounter regardless of the medium (Raivio, 2021).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220,&quot;469777462&quot;:[916,1832,2748,3664,4580,5496,6412,7328,8244,9160,10076,10992,11908,12824,13740,14656],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The guidance via Zoom went great. No rush at all, the teacher had enough time to figure out the basics.<\/p>\n<p>I can email the teacher and the he will respond quickly. If necessary, he offers to explain in Teams if something is unclear.<\/p>\n<p>When I needed help in recognition of prior learning, the teacher helped with it \u201chand in hand\u201d via Zoom.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">4. Trust in yourself and know your boundaries<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There\u2019s no requirement for the teacher to be an expert in all fields. A good\u00a0instructor\u00a0is\u00a0a genuine, compassionate person who stays present and listens actively. A good\u00a0instructor also knows their boundaries and\u00a0when the student needs more\u00a0specialised\u00a0services.\u00a0Respecting your boundaries is also a way of cherishing your own well-being.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220,&quot;469777462&quot;:[916,1832,2748,3664,4580,5496,6412,7328,8244,9160,10076,10992,11908,12824,13740,14656],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Guidance is nor brain surgery nor rocket science.\u00a0Even with a little guiding touch\u00a0it\u2019s possible to help the student to\u00a0solve problems that would\u00a0otherwise\u00a0be\u00a0difficult to\u00a0overcome. Sufficient guidance could\u00a0be\u00a0for example\u00a0as simple as\u00a0asking questions or\u00a0helping to break\u00a0a\u00a0bigger problem\u00a0down\u00a0into smaller parts\u00a0(S\u00e4lj\u00f6, 120).\u00a0In fact, over-caring can make it difficult\u00a0for the student\u00a0to\u00a0stay active\u00a0and increase their\u00a0sense of dependence (Lindqvist, 129).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:220,&quot;469777462&quot;:[916,1832,2748,3664,4580,5496,6412,7328,8244,9160,10076,10992,11908,12824,13740,14656],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The teacher knew how to prioritise, bring focus and encourage.<\/p>\n<p>One challenge at a time, the teacher helped us move forward in our studies. This kind of\u00a0encounter requires time, attention and respect \u2013\u00a0which\u00a0cannot take place if the student is only\u00a0a\u00a0part of a faceless student mass for the teacher. Genuine encounters require an open and confidential atmosphere.
